Law

Bachelor (Undergraduate) Studies

A student who completes the Law studies at our faculty is trained for practical work in full range of jobs in legal affairs. In order to overcome the problem that has been happening with trained lawyers for a longer period of time, which refers to the application of theoretical knowledge acquired in real legal practice during the studies, we put emphasis on training our students through practical work. The aim of the practical work is to provide students with real, practical knowledge and skills during the law studies, and to enable them to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge directly to contemporary legal practices. Through practical work in teaching and extracurricular activities, students are trained to perform legal professions.

Practical work includes:

  • training in writing legal acts and submissions
  • interpretation of legal acts
  • case analysis from legal practice
  • solving practical problems
  • presence at court proceedings
  • practicing in courts
  • court proceedings simulation within the Legal Clinic
  • participation in debates
  • training and competition in rhetoric
  • professional lectures by legal practitioners from the country and abroad

In addition, on the basis of the cooperation that our institution implements with many state bodies, institutions and companies, students have the opportunity to visit the highest authorities in the state, the province and the city (National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Assembly of the Vojvodina, Government of Vojvodina, City Assembly, etc), courts where they can attend trials, the Institute of Forensic Medicine, institutions for the enforcement of criminal sanctions, numerous administrative authorities and companies. It is through the insight into how these organizations operate that the students become acquainted with realistic and practical legal work. In addition to teachers and associates at our institution, the majority of which had the opportunity to perform legal practice during their rich careers, numerous lecturers from the legal practice themselves (judges, lawyers, employees in ministries, secretariats, etc.) participate in practical teaching, thus transferring their rich experiences and knowledge to the students, so that after studying, they will get involved in the process of legal work more easily and quickly.

For the practical classes within the Legal Clinic at our faculty, we engaged:

  • Ivana Karapandžić, senior judge assistant and Higher Court spokesperson in Novi Sad
  • Ivana Milovanović from Niš, judge of the Court of General Jurisdiction in Niš
  • Ljiljana Marjanović from Niš, judge of the Court of General Jurisdiction in Niš

Professional practice

The professional practice has the primary goal of practical application of theoretical knowledge acquired through education at our Faculty, as well as acquiring practical knowledge, skills and experience through the professional affirmation of students in wider legal affairs.

Students of the Law study programme at the Faculty of Law and Business Studies Dr. Lazar Vrkatić have the opportunity to conduct professional practice in:

  • Law offices in Niš
  • Law offices in Novi Sad
  • Administrative Court in Belgrade
  • Court of General Jurisdiction in Novi Sad
  • Court of General Jurisdiction in Niš
  • General Public Prosecution Office in Nis
  • Misdemeanour Court in Niš
  • Commercial Court in Niš
  • Higher Court in Novi Sad
  • Centre for Social Work of the City of Novi Sad
  • Office of the Protector of Citizens' Rights of the City of Niš
  • Office of the Provincial Ombudsman in Novi Sad ... etc.

Within the framework of professional practice in the courts, students attend trials in: misdemeanour procedures, litigation department (general litigation), family dispute departments, labour dispute departments, executive department, extra-judicial section and criminal department. Therefore, students become acquainted with the judicial function and role in the proceedings, court cases, court records and acts – they attend trials, discuss on the course and outcome of the court proceedings with the judge and expert associate and actively participate in the performance of less demanding judicial tasks such as: preparation of court proceedings, drafting resolutions and other acts (decisions, letters, etc.).

Through professional practice with the Provincial Ombudsman in Novi Sad and the Protector of Citizens in Niš, students are introduced to the work of these institutions, their scope of activities and have the opportunity to do internships through practical work.

By performing professional practice in law offices in Novi Sad and Niš, students have the opportunity to gain significant practical knowledge and skills from top attorneys, which will bring them closer not only to the law profession, but also to the complete judicial affairs. Professional practice in the General Public Prosecution Office enables the students to get acquainted with the court legal affairs, to attend investigations, to hear trials, to discuss about the course and outcome of the proceedings with the prosecutors and expert associates, and to (with the prosecutor's permission) actively participate in performing the less demanding tasks such as preparing the procedure, drafting decisions and other acts.
